Fifteen

David and Rob were leaving the lodge restaurant when the elevator doors slid open and Oliver stepped into the lobby. At first, David almost didn’t recognize him. He was wearing dark blue jeans that were perfectly pressed and a forest green cable-knit sweater that was a crewneck, not a cardigan. He had his coat draped over his arm and he was pulling a small suitcase, which at least told David he hadn’t chickened out on going into town with him.

Rob must have seen him too, because he said, “Is that Oliver? Where are his hipster librarian clothes?”

“I have no idea.”

Oliver noticed them then and walked toward them stiffly, like his clothes felt as uncomfortable as they looked. David would ask him about the wardrobe change later when they were alone. “Oliver, this is my friend Rob. We might check out his new ranch while we’re in Anticipation. He’s hoping to move in a few weeks from now.”

Rob held out his hand. Oliver stared down at it for a moment before seeming to realize what he was expected to do. After they shook, Rob said, “David’s told me a lot about you. I’ve only been to Miami a few times, but I love it there. I’m not as used to the cold as David is.”

“But you’re moving here?”

David responded, “Rob’s got several homes around the country, but I’m hoping I’ll be able to convince him to spend a lot of time at his new ranch.”

“Oh, so it’s like a vacation home?”

Rob shook his head. “I have a lot of customers in this region of the country, so I’m thinking I’ll spend at least half my time up here.”

“And most of the rest of your time in California?”

Rob glanced at David and then back at Oliver. “I see David’s been telling you about me as well.”

Oliver’s eyes widened like he was worried he’d said something he shouldn’t. David wanted to reassure him. “Of course I’ve been talking about you, Rob. You’re my best friend and Oliver’s my… newest friend. Obviously, I want to tell the two of you about each other.” Shit, he’d come so damn close to saying boyfriend or something equally scary. What was he thinking? They’d agreed on casual and then modified that to temporary. But under no circumstances was Oliver his boyfriend, and he wasn’t going to be. They only had a few more days together, but he was sure he’d be missing Oliver for months.

Rob grinned at him, clearly having caught what he’d almost said. Oliver glanced nervously between the two of them. They needed to get out of there before David made another mistake. He laid a hand on Oliver’s shoulder. “Are you ready to go?”

“I am. I think I’ve got everything I need to stay for a night.”

“As long as you’ve got your coat, gloves, hat, snow boots, and lots of layers, you’ll be fine.”

“That’s sure a lot more stuff than you need in Miami, right?” Rob said.

David glared at him. The last thing he needed was Rob solidifying Oliver’s distaste for Wyoming’s version of spring.
